Recently we have seen several salvage claims being raised against vessels sailing through the Turkish Straits. Each claim has been in the region of USD 1 million. The salvages were not a result of the vessels losing manoeuvrability, but tugs were connected because the vessels’ speed over ground dropped below 4 knots.

We would like to make members aware that their vessels need to maintain a speed over ground of at least 4 knots when transiting the straits. If this cannot be achieved a tug can request to be connected and a salvage claim may be raised.

Please find below a guide on salvage claims in the Turkish Strait provided by Caglar Coskunsu at Cavus & Coskunsu Law Firm.
