We have been approached by a number of P&I and members to further elaborate on the recent article published in Lloyd´s list Friday 08 April 2011, titled “Egypt beefs up Japan cargo checks” which entails introducing additional inspections for the clearance of commodities imported from Japanese ports.

We have checked the issue locally and our investigation revealed that this matter has been subject to a thorough assessment by the Egyptian cabinet of ministers and that following consideration, the Egyptian Prime minister issued his decree suspending imports of foodstuff, plants, animal and botanical products, ground and soil materials, metal scrap, used cars’ parts / spare parts coming from Japan fearing from any radiation leakage they may have been exposed to as a result of the Japan earthquakes.

The aforementioned Prime minister’s decree has provided for additional radiation inspections for all other products coming from Japan and has subjected imports of foodstuff, plants, botanical products, ground and soil materials and used cars’ parts / spare parts coming from countries surrounding Japan such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, North and South Korea for equal additional radiation inspections.

Meanwhile, strict guidance have been circulated over the relevant health and sanitary departments to implement stricter formalities for control of fish and dairy products imported from South East Asia countries which were more affected by the radiation leak such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, North and South Korea to ensure that these animal and fish products are received safely and without allowing any health or environmental hazards. Towards implementation of the said guidance, samples will be drawn from such products and they will be analyzed in the Nuclear Power Authority’s radiation labs before allowing their circulation over the Egyptian markets.
