Monthly Safety Scenario: Collision while being overtaken
1 April – It was after midnight and the 2nd Officer was on watch. The weather was pleasant and the general cargo vessel was sailing in a busy area. The S-band radar was operational in off centre 12M, north up, relative motion mode, while the x-band radar was on standby. In the cockpit there was also an ECDIS, which the OOW was monitoring.

Icebergs Disrupt North Atlantic Shipping
6 April – An unusually large number of icebergs have drifted into the shipping lanes of the North Atlantic in recent weeks, forcing vessels to detour well to the south to avoid danger.
Yemeni update – Naval mines placed near the island of Zuqar
19 April – The Yemeni Coast Guard warns against getting close to the navigational channel east of the island until the area is cleared of all mines.
Precautionary Recommendations and Local MSA Control Measures in Fog Season around Fujian Waters, China
21 April – According to information received by our local correspondents four incidents occurred past week along the coast line of Fujian province due to fog causing difficulties during navigation.
Philippines – Warning of wet nickel ore cargo in bulk
21 April – Many vessels have not loaded nickel ore for nearly two weeks due to rainfalls. In addition, mines are in bitter conflict with DENR, and mines facing potential closure/suspension are keen to ship out as much nickel ore as they can, which is coupled with panic buying, all adding more pressure on ship owners to make sure that proper pre-loading surveys are conducted.
Anchor-loss USB available free-of-charge
27 April – Based on an analysis of damage cases involving anchor and anchor chain losses, the project partners (DNV GL, Gard, and The Swedish Club) issued a report identifying the most frequent technical and operational causes, and some steps crews and operators can take to address them.
Groundings at main channel “Paso Cortada Isla Nueva”
28 April – As from 18th April 2017 the Navigational Authorities established as main channel the “PASO CORTADA ISLA NUEVA” which goes from Km 335 to Km 345 of the Parana River, replacing the previous one which was round the island.
