Fraud and crime update from IMB
3 May – International Maritime Bureau (IMB) report in their latest confidential bulletin to members about incidents involving Piracy, Fraud, Bribery and Cybercrime. Members can access through the SCOL website (The Swedish Club OnLine member area).

US cease participation in the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA)
9 May – US President Trump has announced that the US will cease participation in the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) involving Iran on the one hand, and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (US, China, France, Russia, UK), Germany and the EU on the other hand.

Honduras – new government circular
9 May – The new deadline for the implementation of the new regulations for the port of Puerto Cortes is from 26 May 2018.

Ebola virus outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo
15 May 2018 – On 8 May 2018, WHO was notified by the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo of two confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease occurring in Bikoro health zone, Equateur province.

Global Measles Outbreak
22 May – The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued a Travel Health Alert Notice regarding Measles outbreaks in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Pacific, noting that measles remains a common disease in these regions. CDC warned that anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of getting infected when they travel internationally.

GDPR guidelines for claims handling
21 May – People claims such as those involving crew or passenger illness and injury present the greatest challenge to the Club in ensuring the adequate protection of personal data. In handling personal illness or injury files it is often necessary to exchange sensitive personal data with members, correspondents and service providers around the world on an urgent basis. Implementing GDPR principles is particularly important.

US sanctions against Iran
28 May – The decision by President Trump announced on 8 May, 2018 to cease the US participation in the JCPOA and to begin re-imposing US nuclear-related sanctions which were lifted to implement the JCPOA, is likely to have significant ramifications for maritime trade with Iran and the insurance of such trade.

The blockchain revolution – what does it really mean for the marine insurance business?
29 May – The consequences of having a broken ladder and working long shifts can lead to fatal accidents. After both loading and discharging, the chief officer should inspect the ladders to ensure they have not been damaged during the cargo operation. It often takes minimal effort to do a job safely. 7 May – This year’s Club Dinner in Istanbul was enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere in the Asian part of the Bosphorus at the DoubleTree by Hilton.
