An unsafe speed in congested water and restricted visibility and lack of situation awareness are all recurring issues in collision claims. The most common vessel types involved with collisions are container vessels (37%) followed by bulk carriers (27%) and tanker vessels (14%).

There may be several factors contribution to an incident, but the most commons are speed and situation awareness. The problem is that the definition of situational awareness can differ a lot from person to person. Situational awareness defines our understanding of what is happening and what is likely to happen. When the bridge officer is not fully aware what is happening around the vessel and has not fully reflected on what the consequences will be because of his actions or inaction then we see poor situational awareness.
