MARS report March 2018
1 March – The monthly publication MARS, from The International Journal of The Nautical Institute, is a confidential reporting scheme by the mariners to protect the mariner. The scheme supports risk assessment and offers a free, searchable database of accidents and near misses.
Listeriosis outbreak in South Africa
6 March – This loss prevention notice relates to the Listeriosis outbreak in South Africa – the source is a unique strain of listeria that has caused the world’s biggest documented listeriosis outbreak with over 550 cases reported since the start of 2017.
Fire! Every seafarer’s worst fear
19 March – When a fire breaks out on board a vessel there is no fire service ready to assist in extinguising it – that is up to the crew themselves. The Club, in conjunction with Burgoynes, have produced a handbook – Fire! A guide to the causes and prevention of cargo fires – which can be used alongside the regulations to assist seafarers in their daily loss prevention efforts.

Stena Line joins with The Swedish Club to test emergency plans
9 March – The Swedish Club and Stena Line have completed a major Emergency Response Training Exercise, designed to test how Stena’s own comprehensive emergency procedures integrate with those of the authorities and support services in the event of a major incident.
The Swedish Club delivers P&I Discount of five percent following solid result
23 March – The Swedish Club delivered a solid operating result to its Board on March 22, continuing a record of building on steady growth. It emerged from 2017 prepared and well positioned to take advantage of a stabilising market.The Club was pleased to report an increase in entered tonnage to more than 51 million GT, an all- time high, and a testament to the commitment and expertise of the Club’s team of dedicated professionals.

The Swedish Club welcomes WMU students
2 March – The World Maritime University visited The Swedish Club head office to gain an insight of the marine insurance business. These visits have become an appreciated tradition which started 19 years ago.
A guided tour through engine damage at the Club’s seminar in Oslo
19 March – With an attendance of around 30 participants representing brokers, shipowners and adjusters, the turnout was well in line with what has now become an annual tradition at the Club’s breakfast seminar in Oslo. Peter Stålberg, Senior Technical Advisor at the Gothenburg head office, was the morning’s quizmaster when he took the audience on a guided tour through engine damage and claims with a particular emphasis on auxiliary engines.
