Safety Alert for ABB A100-M radial type turbochargers
26 September – This Safety Alert is to advise you of a possible safety hazard associated with ABB turbochargers of the type A100-M radial (A130-M, A135-M, A140-M, A145-M, A150-M and A155-M).
Garbage disposal in Argentina
23 September – There are three main points to be considered with regards to the disposal of garbage on board vessels, which has triggered a number of questions from Clubs and their members.
Zika Virus Update: Mosquito Eradication Certificate required from Singapore to China
16 September – Follow-up Advice on Requirement of MEC for Vessels from ZIKA Affected Areas by Chinese Quarantine Authority. Singapore was added to Zika Virus Affected Country from 1 September 2016.
China – Low sulphur content implementation issued by local authorities in Shenzhen
14 September – As from 1 October 2016, ships calling Shenzhen port (including Yantian, Shekou, Chiwan, Mawan, Dachan Bay) are required to use fuel with sulfur content ≤0.5%m/m when staying at berth (from one hour after getting berthed till one hour before departure from berth).
Ballast Water Management Convention to enter into force on 8 September 2017
9 September – The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments will enter into force on 8 September 2017. This follows the IMO confirming that the conditions for initiating entry into force were met on 8 September 2016.
Argentina – Supernumeraries without visa, a high expense
8 September – Our correspondent in Argentina have notified us that an increase of supernumeraries – mainly high ranked crew members’ wives – arriving in Argentina without holding the necessary VISA when required.
Gabon – Port situation
8 September – As situation may evolve quickly and we strongly recommend Members to check with their local agents in the preparation of their calls and to advise crewmembers to limit their movements outside the port’s limits.
Revised MARPOL requirements for oil residue (sludge) piping arrangements
7 September – The IMO has adopted amendments to Regulation 12 of MARPOL Annex I, which will enter into force on 1 January 2017. The amendments mean that oil residue (sludge) tanks must have no discharge connections to the bilge system, oily bilge water holding tank(s), tank top or oily water separators.

5 September – The Nautical Institute is an international representative body for maritime professionals and has over 7,000 members in 115 different countries. The Swedish Club cooperates with partners to prevent anchor loss
19 September – The Swedish Club cooperated with DNV GL and Gard earlier this year in a major initiative designed to reduce anchor losses. The root cause of many groundings and collisions; lost anchors are among the top five reasons for claims costs.
