Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement

The Swedish Club, also know and registered as Sveriges Ångfartygs Assurans Förening, is dedicated to promoting high standards of ethical business practices across all aspects of its operations. The Swedish Club is equally committed to cultivating a positive and inclusive working environment where dignity, respect, and fairness are fundamental principles upheld for all employees.

The Club has a zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery and is committed to preventing slavery, forced labour and human trafficking.

Corporate structure

The Swedish Club is a marine mutual insurer, founded in 1872, and is a member of the International Group of Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Clubs. The head office is situated in Gothenburg, Sweden, with branch offices in London, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Oslo. There is also a representative office in Athens.

Supervision is primarily carried by the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority and the Club is licensed to provide insurance for Ships (Class 6), Ship Liability (Class 12) and Legal Expenses (Class 17). Members are offered high-quality insurance services in P&I, FD&D, H&M and thereto related products.

UK business operations are conducted through the London branch office, which received permanent authorisation in September 2023. The branch is authorised to issue insurance contracts in the same categories as the head office, and its activities are regulated by both the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

Supply chains

The Swedish Club’s business and supply chains can be categorised as follows:

  • Business partners, such as correspondents, surveyors, loss adjustors, experts (i.e. navigational, cargo experts), lawyers, brokers, reinsurers and auditors.
  • Suppliers, engaged to maintain the day-to-day operations, such as office suppliers, on- and off-site contractors and external IT support.

The Swedish Club does not act as a manufacturer or retailer of physical goods and have no supply chains in relation to such activities.

Policies and procedures

Regarding its internal operations, The Swedish Club strives to foster a safe and inclusive workplace for all employees. The policies and procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook and internal governance framework, adopted to ensure ethical and compliant business practices, while also informing staff of their rights and protections, include the following:

  • Discrimination and harassment
  • Recruitment policy

The Swedish Club ensures that employees are informed about its ethical standards, professional business practices and relevant internal policies. Furthermore, all employees are notified of the Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement.

Policies and procedures are regularly reviewed.

The Swedish Club acknowledges its responsibility to ensure that their suppliers uphold fair and ethical labour practices. Where applicable, contractual clauses, demanding suppliers´ adherence to labour law- and human trafficking requirements have been adopted. In addition, suppliers are required to adhere to The Swedish Club’s Supplier Code of Conduct, which outlines a comprehensive set of expectations for suppliers. These include adherence to human rights and compliance with employment laws, ethical conduct, and the respectful treatment of individuals.

The Swedish Club remains committed to continuously reviewing and improving its policies and procedures to ensure that they accurately reflect the business´s legal and regulatory obligations.  Furthermore, to ensure that the policies and procedures actively counteract any involvement in modern slavery or human trafficking, whether within its own operations or those of its suppliers. This dedication is aligned with The Swedish Club’s integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its organisational culture. The Club upholds high standards and expects the same from all its commercial and professional partners.

Risk assessment

The Swedish Club has conducted an assessment and determined that, as a marine insurer, the risk of slavery and human trafficking within its operations is minimal. Additionally, the likelihood of supply chains being involved in modern slavery or human trafficking is low. The Club’s key suppliers and business partners are reputable professional firms, carefully selected based on their business practices.

This statement is made pursuant to section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and was approved by the Board of Directors on 21 November 2024 and signed by the Chairman of the Board on behalf of the Board of Directors of The Swedish Club.
